Abstract. Let Jμ[X; q, t] be the integral form of the Macdonald polynomial and set H̃μ[X; q, t] = tJμ[X/(1− 1/t); q, 1/t ], where n(μ) = ∑ i(i− 1)μi. This paper focusses on the linear operator ∇ defined by setting ∇H̃μ = tq ′)H̃μ. This operator occurs naturally in the study of the Garsia-Haiman modules Mμ. It was originally introduced by the first two authors to give elegant expressions to Frobenius characteristics of intersections of these modules (see [3]). However, it was soon discovered that it plays a powerful and ubiquitous role throughout the theory of Macdonald polynomials. Our main result here is a proof that ∇ acts integrally on symmetric functions. An important corollary of this result is the Schur integrality of the conjectured Frobenius characteristic of the Diagonal Harmonic polynomials [11]. Another curious aspect of ∇ is that it appears to encode a q, t-analogue of Lagrange inversion. In particular, its specialization at t = 1 (or q = 1) reduces to the q-analogue of Lagrange inversion studied by Andrews [1], Garsia [7] and Gessel [17]. We present here a number of positivity conjectures that have emerged in the few years since ∇ has been discovered. We also prove a number of identities in support of these conjectures and state some of the results that illustrate the power of ∇ within the Theory of Macdonald polynomials.

The exponential functions of central-symmetric $X$-form matrices
It is well known that the matrix exponential function has practical applications in engineering and applied sciences. In this paper, we present some new explicit identities to the exponential functions of a special class of matrices that are known as central-symmetric $X$-form. For instance, $e^{mathbf{A}t}$, $t^{mathbf{A}}$ and $a^{mathbf{A}t}$ will be evaluated by the new formulas in this par...

We outline here a proof that a certain rational function C n (q; t) which has come to be known as the \q; t-Catalan" is in fact a polynomial with positive integer coeecients. Since C n (q; t) evaluates to the Catalan number at t = q = 1, it has also been an open problem to nd a pair of statistics a; b on the collection D n of Dyck paths of length 2n yielding C n (q; t) = P t a(() q b((). We survey the proof of a series of conjectures in combinatorics using new results on the geometry of Hilbert schemes. The combinatorial results include the positivity conjecture for Macdonald’s symmetric functions, and the “n!” and “(n + 1)n−1” conjectures relating Macdonald polynomials to the characters of doubly-graded Sn modules. To make the treatment self-contained, we include background ma...

This paper gives a review of Cherednik’s results on the representation-theoretic approach to Macdonald polynomials and related special functions. Macdonald polynomials are a remarkable 2-parameter family of polynomials which can be associated to every root system. As special cases, they include the Schur functions, the q-Jacobi polynomials, and certain spherical functions on real and p-adic sym...

We prove Okounkov’s conjecture, a conjecture of Fomin-FultonLi-Poon, and a special case of Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon’s conjecture on Schur positivity and give several more general statements using a recent result of Rhoades and Skandera. We include an alternative derivation of this result directly from Haiman’s work on Schur positive immanants. Our results imply an intriguing log-concavity propert...
